Be a child of God

John 1:12

Ben-oni Blay · 3 July 2026

Main Scripture: John 1:12

"Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God."

1. What It Means to Be a Child of God

Being a child of God is not based on our background, achievements, or good works. It comes through faith in Jesus Christ. When we accept Him, God adopts us into His family, giving us a new identity and purpose.

Key Point: Our identity is found in Christ, not in the world.

2. A Child of God Reflects the Father's Character

Children often resemble their parents. As God's children, we should reflect His love, holiness, kindness, forgiveness, and mercy in our daily lives.

Scripture: Ephesians 5:1 – "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children."

Key Point: Our lifestyle should show that we belong to God.

3. A Child of God Trusts the Father

Just as a child trusts a loving parent, we are called to trust God in every situation. He knows our needs and works all things for our good.

Scripture: Proverbs 3:5–6

Key Point: Faith grows when we depend on God rather than ourselves.

4. A Child of God Lives in Obedience

God's children obey Him out of love, not fear. Obedience brings blessings, spiritual growth, and a closer relationship with God.

Scripture: John 14:15 – "If you love me, keep my commands."

Key Point: True love for God is demonstrated through obedience.

5. A Child of God Has an Eternal Hope

This world is temporary, but God's children have the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. No matter what we face, our future is secure in Him.

Scripture: Romans 8:16–17

Key Point: Our greatest inheritance is eternal life with God.

Conclusion

Being a child of God is the greatest privilege anyone can have. It means we are loved, forgiven, guided, protected, and promised eternal life. Let us live each day in a way that honors our Heavenly Father and reflects His love to the world.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for making us Your children through Jesus Christ. Help us to live according to Your will, reflect Your love, trust You in every circumstance, and remain faithful until the end. In Jesus' name, Amen.
